Radio Frequency Ablation (RF) for Non-Operative Mechanical Low Back
After being diagnosed with facet joint pain, you may be a candidate for radio frequency medial branch neurotomy. In this procedure, a physician guides a radio frequency probe down into the affected facet joint nerve. Then a mild painless radio frequency energy, similar to microwave heat, is transmitted at the targeted site electronically stimulating the offending nerve and tissue with heat.

The end result is the inability to perceive pain from the symptomatic facet joint. Essentially, these procedures are performed in an identical fashion to the diagnostic facet joint nerve blocks. The procedure takes less time than one hour and is done on an outpatient basis allowing most patients to experience a rapid recovery of just two to four weeks.
