Joint Replacement

Thomas O. Miller, M.D., the founder of the Bone & Joint Center, performed Wausau's first joint replacement in 1969. Today, the team of Bone & Joint surgeons perform nearly 400 joint replacements each year.

The Bone & Joint Center is considered the leader in joint replacement surgery in Central Wisconsin, because we perform such a significant number of total joint replacements with outstanding results for our patients.

Arthritis, other degenerative joint diseases, and joint injury deprive people of mobility and independence. Although joint replacement patients are generally over 60, younger individuals may also benefit from the surgery.

The number of individuals with arthritis has increased with both the large aging population and the active lifestyles of adults today. Arthritis affects about 40 million Americans, which ultimately leads to an increased need for joint replacement surgery. Joint replacement involves removing a patient's arthritis, and the damage caused by arthritis, and replacing it with a new, artificial joint that diminishes pain, and increases mobility.

Our surgeons have a wealth of experience. And they incorporate advanced techniques and medical breakthroughs into their treatments, like the mini-incision total hip replacement we quickly put into practice for the benefit of our patients.

If your doctor recommends joint replacement surgery, these are questions to ask your surgeon:

  • What are the risks and potential complications of knee or hip replacement surgery?
  • How long will my procedure take?
  • How long will I be in the hospital?
  • When will I be able to resume normal activities?
  • How much pain relief or increased mobility can I expect?
  • Which implant have you chosen for my joint replacement?
  • What are the clinical results of the implant system you have chosen?
  • What, in your opinion, makes this implant the best available implant for my condition?
